Community and Family Support Services

Family Support Co-ordinators work with families who have a special needs family member (child or adult), living at home. Families are assisted in accessing services that will meet the individual needs of their challenged family member, to foster and enhance family and community living.

This assistance could be in the form of identifying the needs and the appropriate supports necessary for both short and long term planning or to help families develop the skills to effectively assume control over their own service provision. In-home and Out-of-home, planned as well as emergency respite services, are provided for family who indicate they are in need of a break from the constant 24 - 7 of caring for their child. Assistance is provided to the families with the application process to various programs, government grants, social clubs, agencies etc. for extra financial assistance for needs above and beyond the norm - ie: braces, surgeries, wheelchair purchases and maintenance, feeding equipment, special clothes, fees for specialize programs and memberships etc.

We provide assistance with the application process for Special Services at Home. When a contract is awarded, a worker is recommended, then interviewed by the family. Resources are made available and ongoing training, supervision and administration is provided to the in-home worker as well as whatever support the family may require.

Assistance is provided to access the Community Service(s) that is/are required to meet the needs of the family. Services such as; assessment and treatment, counseling, education, medical, financial, protection, recreational, volunteer, service clubs, parent groups, etc. are accessed.

Other programs have also been initiated by Community and Family Support Services as a response to families request for additional support. Programs such as; tutoring on computers, activity room sessions for the younger children, summer camp for children, and coffee hour for parents.

New programs this winter will include anger management and social skills training for parents who have children with difficulties in these areas. The younger children and teens will be included in this program.

All of this is done to provide a supportive relationship to families which includes a genuine concern, the giving of encouragement and advocacy around issues of importance to every family unit so that their needs may be met in the best possible way.
