Supported Independent
Living
Adults who
live in apartments in the community and require minimal staff support fall under
the Supported Independent Living Program (SIL). This unique and individualistic
program offered under the Community Living Port Colborne - Wainfleet,
offers individuals a chance to broaden their horizons by either graduating from
a fully staffed home or leaving their family or care giver's home for the first
time.
In SIL, support is offered according to what needs each individual has, allowing
them to verbalize the exact support they would like or require. Supports may fall
into various categories including: money management, cooking, health and safety
and socialization to name just a few. Staffing tends to be very flexible so each
individual's needs can be addressed. Due to the flexibility of hours and emphasis
on individualism, SIL has proven to be a successful and necessary component of
the Community Living Port Colborne - Wainfleet.
Supported Employment
The three individuals that started their new business called "Compactors" are
doing wonderful. They are under the umbrella of Community Living Employment Services.
The business is run quite independent, with minimal help from support staff.
This business involves collecting cans, either by "pick up" or "drop off" and
then they compact (crush) the cans. After they are crushed manually (physical
labour is involved) the individuals bag them and off they go to the salvage, transported
by support staff for cash value. The limited amount of money they earn is directed
back into the business to cover supplies and wages.
They thank all the group homes, staff, businesses and all others who have supported
them, either by giving cans or just lending a hand. "Thank you for giving us the
opportunity and letting us get the experience."
A continuation of cans dropped off at Amelia or a pick-up of cans at your home
or business would be greatly appreciated. If you need a pick-up call 835-8941
ext. 42.
Thanks again,
"The Compactor Crew"
Employment Services
Employment Services supports individuals in finding gainful employment. They support
individuals in finding jobs that suit their needs, provide opportunities to experience
different work settings by using training sites within our community.
They also assist in writing resumes, provide career planning through a pictorial
assessment of job interests, address job readiness through promoting positive
attitudes and habits of acquiring and maintaining employment.
Once a job has been obtained the employment support worker monitors and offers
job coaching and on going training as needed to both the employer and employee.
This may also include being involved with appraisals, evaluations, disciplinary
situations and emotional support needed to maintain a job in the community. In
some instances the individual is provided with transportation and one on one support
depending on their capabilities to achieve a life long goal.
Adult Day Services
Adult Day Services enjoys several activities such as, swimming, bowling, watching movies, and cooking, these activities are offered year round. Individuals venture out into the community or stay in their own center and enjoy the activity of their choice.
The schedule changes four times a year with special excursions planned on a regular basis. The Adult Day Program allows individuals to meet new friends, enjoy something new or take a trip somewhere they haven't been.
